The Mariner Jacket

Our reinterpretation of the deck jacket

Our Mariner Man jacket is directly inspired by the famous Deck Jacket N1. This jacket was originally worn during the Second World War by US Navy soldiers to brave fickle weather conditions on the decks of US Navy frigates. It is a Hoalen wardrobe essential for more than ten yers.

The N1 has stood the test of time without aging a bit: functional, reassuring, and still relevant in today's wardrobe.

We sometimes forget that its silhouette was born out of a very practical need. In the early 1930s, the US Navy uniform had hardly changed. The sailors, however, demanded better: more protection, more comfort, and more effectiveness against the elements. Despite the Great Depression, the general staff redesigned the equipment and came up with three outfits, each dedicated to a different climate: cold, wet, and tropical.

It was the “cold weather” version, the N1, that prevailed. Developed until 1943, it became the iconic uniform worn by American sailors during World War II. At the heart of the system was the deck jacket: a sturdy outer fabric, a “jungle cloth” with an almost ribbed feel, lined with alpaca wool to retain heat. On the chest was the “USN” marking. Inside the collar was a white label, precise, contractual, military.

Designed to withstand the sea, wind, and salt, the N1 protected generations of sailors. And if it continued to exist long after the war, it was not out of nostalgia: it was because its design was so obvious. A useful, durable piece that, over time, became a classic.

Our Deck Jacket

Our Mariner Man coat takes the basics from the N1 jacket and retains its iconic silhouette.

Choice of fabric

Unlike ribbed jungle fabric, our Mariner jacket is made with British Millerain fabric. A British manufacturer specializing in waxed canvas, this fabric combines robustness and suppleness. Easy-care, it contains a unique blend of waxes that offer the advantage of being machine-washable and weather-resistant.

To keep your jacket's waxed cotton shiny, supple and water-repellent (after around 5 washes), you can easily rewax it yourself with a spray wax (we recommend Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On). Our Ocean Stores also offer you the option of bringing your jacket to the store for rewaxing (allow 24 hours for your jacket to dry in the store).
